Investigation on dioxin and heavy metal emissions from stationary sources and in the environmental media in Pingtung County

Absrtact
One large scale municipal solid waste incinerator (A), one middle/small incinerators (B) and one smelting plant (C) were investigated in this study. Experimental results showed that PCDD/F concentrations of A, B, and C were 0.0950, 0.121, and 0.0125ng I-TEQ/Nm3, and their annual PCDD/F emissions were 0.788, 4.14, and 0.121 μg I-TEQ, respectively. All of them are lower than the regulation limit of Taiwan EPA. The metal levels were also observed in this study. The mean contents of Pb, Cd, and Hg of A were 0.0448, 0.00554, and 0.00640 mg/Nm3, respectively, and their annual emissions were 88.5, 12.6, and 10.9 kg/Y, respectively. The mean metal content and the annual emission of Pb, Cd, and Hg of B were 1.27, 0.0178, and ND mg/Nm3, and 109, 1.53, and NA kg/Y, respectively. The mean metal content and the annual emission of Pb, Cd, and Hg of C were 0.464, 0.0603, and 0.00240 mg/Nm3, and 24.8, 3.22, and 0.192 kg/Y, respectively. Moreover, the mean PCDD/Fs level in ambient air, soil, and vegetation nearby the large scale municipal solid waste incinerator were 0.0427 pg I-TEQ/Nm3, 8.48, and 1.31 ng I-TEQ/kg, respectively.
